Photo-Sharing a Popular Pastime

Americans, particularly women, love to share photos online, a new study has found.

Forty-six percent of adult American Internet users post original photos or videos online and 41 percent repost photos or videos on sites designed for sharing images, Pew Research found. Pew calls the first group “creators,” and the second group “curators.”

Young people are far more likely than older adults to post original photos and videos online, the study found. Only 29 percent of those in the 65-plus age bracket are “creators” followed by the 50 to 64 age group at 28 percent. By comparison, approximately half of 30- to 49-year-olds do so while about seven in 10 of the 18 to 29 age group are posters. Curators follow much the same pattern.

Women dominate Pinterest, one of the most popular posting sites, with 19 percent posting to the site compared to five percent of men. Pinterest is also most popular with college-educated women under the age of 65, the study found.

According to an August 2012 study from Pingdom, Pinterest is not the only social media site dominated by women. Sixty percent of Facebook and Twitter users are female. Male-dominated sites include Slashdot (87 percent), Hacker News (77 percent), and Stack Overflow (76 percent).
